Staffordshire Businesses Pull Together to Help Rural Communities

The Staffordshire Rural Support Network - now in its seventh year after being set up in the wake of the outbreaks of foot and mouth disease in 2001 - is the official charity for the racecourse's Staffordshire Day on Sunday 11 May.

As well as a racecourse donation from gate receipts, there are fundraising hospitality packages and race sponsorships which are being organised by Mr Weetman, a racehorse owner and racing industry sponsor.

David MacDonald, General Manager of Uttoxeter Racecourse said: "As a racecourse, our business was badly affected by foot and mouth - we closed down for five months. Through that experience, we came to understand more than ever before the economic and social pressures on local farming communities.

"So we are delighted to support once again the superb efforts of one of our major supporters - Ed Weetman - who does so much for this local charity."

Ed Weetman Haulage & Storage, of Great Haywood, was formed more than 30 years ago. Mr Weetman, who comes from an agricultural background, began transporting animal feeds for a local feed mill - now he runs one of the largest bulk haulage companies in the Midlands.

An array of attractions from the county is being laid on for the fifth annual 'Staffordshire Day'.

The feast of entertainment for the Sunday family crowd includes food and drink stalls offering delicious local produce, plus family amusements in the centre of the racecourse.

On Sunday 11 May, admission gates open at midday for a first race time of 2pm. The last race is at 5pm.

*Admission: £20 (Premier Enclosure); £16 (Grandstand & Paddock); and £8 (Centre Course Family Enclosure). Children under 16 enter free when accompanied by an adult. Advance group bookings for the Premier or Grandstand & Paddock Enclosures receive a discount. More information is available at www.uttoxeter-racecourse.co.uk.
