Taking the first steps into work - applying for that first job?

Jared Wells, personal adviser at Jobcentre Plus says,

Get the basics right
• Make your CV the best possible - neat, short, positive-sounding and free from mistakes. For ideas look at other people's CVs at: www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk
• Write a good covering letter and highlight interesting points about why you are right for the job
• Find out if your application needs to be sent online or by post
• Be available and flexible to discuss your C.V further and meet for interviews
• Know the time, date and location of any interview
• Work out your journey and allow for cancellations or diversions

Do your research
• Understand what the organisation does and what the job entails
• Look at the company's website and find out who you're meeting
• Read through your CV and application form and think about how you can fit your skills and experience to match those required by the job

Practice makes perfect
• Practice answering likely interview questions with family or friends
• Keep your answers short and snappy and always tell the truth
• Don't forget to show off your relevant experience

Dress for success
• First impressions count, so think about what you're going to wear at the interview
• Dress appropriately for the position you are going for
• If you are unsure what to wear ask a friend or your Jobcentre Plus adviser for advice

Last minute tips
• Go to bed early the night before any interview and set your alarm
• Try and arrive at least 10 minutes early
• Turn off your mobile if you have one
• Take a few deep breaths to steady your nerves and smile as you enter the room
• Show you're confident through good body language: offer a firm handshake, maintain eye contact and sit or stand straight with your head held high
