Help for Businesses in Getting the Right People for the Job

Jobcentre Plus is contacting local businesses to let them know about Work Trials. This is a government scheme where companies can trial potential employees for up to 15 days before deciding whether to make them a firm job offer.

Recent research carried out by Jobcentre Plus revealed only 26 per cent of employers had heard of Work Trials, yet more than twice that number thought they were relevant to their business. Interest was especially high amongst small and medium-sized companies.

"A Work Trial is a test period in the working environment; it's an ideal way to find out if an applicant is the right person for the job," explained Carol Hemming, employer engagement manager for Jobcentre Plus in Staffordshire.

Carol added:

"During the Work Trial the employee stays on their normal benefits so there's no cost to the employer. They get the chance to show their aptitude, enthusiasm and skills and the employer gets time to decide whether the person can do the job. There's no obligation on either side."

The Three Queens Hotel in Burton-on-Trent has successfully recruited staff using Work Trials.

Operations manager Nigel Fielding said:

"I would have no hesitation in using Work Trials again. It gives people time to try a job - an interview doesn't always reflect someone's true potential. Through a Work Trial, someone who is now a valued member of our team was able to demonstrate his skills."

Jobcentre Plus provides a range of tailored support to help employers fill their vacancies. These free services include organising jobsfairs, producing promotional materials, sifting applications and help with interviews. Work Trials can be combined with government-funded training programmes to help prepare new employees for starting work and ensure they have the skills they need. Most job vacancies can be offered on a work trial basis, and most unemployed people are eligible to apply for one, although there are some terms and conditions.

Employers who would like more information about Work Trials should call Jobcentre Plus on 01785 358816.
