Retailer goes Green and Strikes Gold

A Tutbury retailer has become one of the first in the area to sell products made of "green" glass - recycled bottles and jars in a variety of colours.

The Crystal Studio on High Street is an agent for Spanish Recycled Glass, made in the oldest and largest factory in the world manufacturing genuine, 100% recycled glass products.

"When people think of recycled glass, they usually imagine green bottles," says Mike Underwood from The Crystal Studio. "Now, though, Spanish Recycled Glass is being turned into vases and unusually shaped bowls in a variety of vibrant colours, such as red, petrol blue, gold and even black alabaster."

The manufacturers point out that production of recycled glass offers a substantial saving not only in terms of raw material but also fuel because furnaces producing recycled glass can work at a lower temperature than those producing "new" glass.

"There are no raw-material costs, so the prices are unbelievable. When we had a few pieces in the shop to test whether they would sell, customers were coming in and asking if we'd put the right price on them," adds Mike.

"Global climate change and all that accompanies it has led to a worldwide interest in eco-friendly products, so we're delighted to be selling a product that's green - although not necessarily in colour!"
