Save Energy and Cut your Heating Bills

The Energy Saving Trust advice centre West Midlands can offer you free, impartial, expert advice on how to heat your home efficiently, save energy and reduce your monthly household bills.

Nearly 50% of all the heat lost in an average home is through the roof and walls and a further 20% lost through ventilation and drafts. Many houses in the West Midlands suffer from poor energy efficiency and would benefit from simple home improvements.

Simon Wright Regional Manager of the Energy Saving Trust advice centre West Midlands explains "An energy efficient home is a warm home. By making a few basic home improvements people can stay warm, save energy and save money this winter."

Loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, draught proofing, double-glazing and more efficient boilers can all save energy and reduce heating costs.

According to research from the Energy Saving Trust, a few simple home improvements can result in big savings in energy consumption and utility bills:

• Installing 270mm (10 inches) of loft insulation can save up to fifteen percent off your heating costs.

• Cavity wall insulation is another cost-effective measure and can reduce heat loss through the wall by up to 60% and save you around £160 each year on your heating bill.

• Draught excluders for doors, windows and letterboxes can reduce the amount of warm air escaping from the home, at relatively little cost.

• Replacing an old boiler could save you a third on your heating bills. By upgrading heating controls as well fitting a condensing boiler, you could increase these savings to 40%.
