College Holds Summer School to Improve Language Skills
The week long English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) School, which was held at the College's Lichfield Street Campus, was designed to help those learners who will be starting ESOL classes in September, get used to the College environment.
Over the week, the group were given an insight into the four language skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening, reflecting the aim of the classes, which is to enable people to communicate well and carry out everyday practical tasks in both work and social situations. To mark their success in completing the course, the group were presented with certificates at an informal presentation.
Commenting on the event, Curriculum Leader Alison Hodgson said, "The College offers ESOL courses from beginner to advanced level and it is through these classes that people of many nationalities improve their language skills, learn about the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, make friends, and start the process of integrating into British society. All of the learners attending the Summer School are new to the College and so the week provided the perfect opportunity to provide them with an introduction to the College, their tutors and what the classes entail. In addition, many are new to the area so it was also a chance to show them around the town and its facilities and for them to meet their fellow learners. The main aim was really to let learners dispel any nervousness they may have in coming into the College. Overall, the Summer School has provided a taster of studying in the UK, which can be very different from education in other countries."
The part time ESOL courses, which are run by Burton College, are specially designed to improve English language skills for those who do not have English as their first language. To find out more information about ESOL classes, please call Alison Hodgson on 01283 494489.
