Students Restore Noticeboards for Parish Council

Presented at the church's Remembrance Day service, the Roll of Honour board, which has been crafted out of solid oak and oak veneer, was made to honour the memory of an additional five members of the parish who died in World War 1 and whose names were omitted from the original board sited at the church.

The second year full-time students embarked on the project after they were approached by the church to see if they could help, and used time-honoured joinery skills to replicate the original framework in traditional materials.

Commenting on the project, Public Services Course Leader Malcolm Goode said, "I have been conducting a fairly extensive research project into all of the Burton men who died in both World Wars and I found five men whose names were omitted from the current Roll of Honour board at St Mary's Church. Together with one of the Church Wardens Marion Young, I felt that it was vitally important to add their names so we approached the Timber Trades section of the College to see if they could help to replicate the existing board with the addition of the extra names. They were more than willing to help and the result is fantastic. We're very grateful to them for their time and effort."

Advanced Practitioner Faculty of Technology Ian Vanes-Jones, who teaches the students, added, "The project provided the students with the opportunity to enhance their practical skills in a real life situation; something that is difficult to re-create in a workshop or classroom. The new board clearly demonstrates their craftsmanship, knowledge and skills."
