College Rewards Employees of the Year

The awards were made in three categories; Manager of the Year Award for a manager who has successfully introduced a significant change and provided outstanding vision and support for members of their team, Lecturer Award for demonstrating outstanding teaching, training and learning and the Business Support Staff Award for outstanding contribution in a support role which has led to improved services. Winners of the three awards were presented with certificates by Keith Norris, Principal and Chief Executive and a cheque for £100, whilst the three runners up received certificates and a £50 cheque.

Melanie Kemp, Curriculum Area Leader Skills for Life & Work received the Manager of Year Award in honour of her clear vision, commitment and tireless work in effecting change in her area. In addition she was praised for her outstanding energy and level of support she offers to colleagues. Ian Vanes-Jones, Advanced Practitioner Faculty of Technology received the Lecturer of the Year Award for the helpfulness, support, guidance and encouragement he provides to both students and peers. His professionalism and high standards have seen him achieve 100% pass rates over the last three consecutive years. Andy Spears, Workshop Manager received the Business Support Staff of the Year Award for the high level of support he provides to the College's Engineering & Motor Vehicle section, ensuring that the level of health and safety in the workshops is of the highest standard, which has been complimented by Health and Safety Inspectors. His colleagues also acknowledged the fact that he is a very obliging and approachable member of staff who responds quickly to requests no matter how busy he is.

Also honoured were three members of staff who received runners up prizes. Quality Manager Damian Brant received the prize in the Management category for his hard work in advancing the efficiency of College processes. His high standards and ability to remain calm and professional under pressure have been instrumental in his achievements, which were recognised in the Ofsted inspection earlier this year. Sue Wesker, Curriculum Leader Mathematics, who was awarded the prize in the Lecturer
of the Year category, was praised for her positive manner and ability to lead by example, this has resulted in a strong Mathematics team and high success rates. In addition, she was recognised for being extremely hard working and having a good rapport with students of all ages and abilities. Runner up in the Business Support Staff category was Yvonne Gould, Reprographics Assistant, acknowledging the fact that she always goes the extra mile to help staff, has never ending patience and a great sense of humour.

Commenting on the employees' achievements, College Principal and Chief Executive Keith Norris said, "The College's overall goal is to ensure that we exceed the expectations of all our students and corporate clients. Clearly this is only possible if we have high quality and dedicated staff, which are constantly striving to achieve excellence. We all recognise that we have a major impact on the lives of a large number of people of all ages who rely on us to develop their skills. Every member of staff strives to ensure they have the best possible chance of success. The Employee of the Year Awards are designed to honour those members of staff who have demonstrated a commitment, above and beyond the call of duty, to helping to create a high quality learning environment. They have been honoured for their dedication to serving the needs of the College's students, achieving exceptionally high standards of performance and consistently displaying the College's Core Values including the achievement of high quality standards and exhibiting outstanding energy and commitment. I'd like to congratulate Melanie, Ian, Andy, Damian, Sue and Yvonne on their achievements; all have played an important role in helping the College to achieve its goals."
