Residents Required to Uphold Standards

All Councillors are required to sign up to a Code of Conduct which regulates the way in which they behave.

The responsibility for considering written complaints about Councillors for breach of this Code now belongs to the Standards Committees of local authorities.

These Committees are chaired by independent people who have no personal connection with the Council. They also include Councillors from various Councils.

In future, if anyone wants to complain about the conduct of a Borough, Parish or Town Councillor they will need to complete a form available from the Borough Council's website at www.eaststaffsbc.gov.uk or the Monitoring Officer at East Staffordshire Borough Council, Town Hall, Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire, DE14 2EB.

The Standards Committee can only deal with complaints about the behaviour of a Member. It won't deal with complaints about things that are not covered by the Code of Conduct. If you make a complaint to the Standards Committee you must explain why you think a Member has not followed that Code.

The Borough Council's Code of Conduct is available on the Council's website. This Code, and the Register of Members' Interests, may be inspected at the above address during office hours.

The Codes of Conduct and Register of Interests for Town and Parish Councils within the Borough are available from the relevant Town/Parish Clerk. Their details can be obtained from the Town/Parish Council or the Monitoring Officer at the Borough Council.

If you would be interested in being an independent member of the Standards Committee, please contact the Monitoring Officer as the Committee will shortly be appointing two more members.
