Help for Homeless from Council Contract

Following consultation earlier in the year, the Council has now adopted its new Homelessness Strategy which sets out its strategic approach towards homelessness over the next few years.

The Council has taken the opportunity to enhance its service over and above its statutory obligation especially front-line services provided to people who are worried about losing their homes and those who are homeless.

The new service will include a one-to-one needs assessment and advice session for every customer to help them avoid losing their home or find alternative accommodation.

Cllr Hardwick, Deputy Leader for Development and Regeneration, said:  "We want our service to help all those who could find themselves homeless. If you find yourself in this situation then you will be able to see someone to discuss your circumstances and what options are open to you, helping you to make the right decisions about your housing needs."

Following open competition the Council is awarding a contract for delivery of the improved service to Trent & Dove Housing who will deliver the service from their offices on behalf of the Council.

Award of the contract to Trent & Dove will mean that there will be continuity of service provision when the existing contract with Trent & Dove expires in September.

Another benefit of continuing to use Trent & Dove is that they also process applications for social housing in East Staffordshire and so these services will be available to customers at the same locations.

Councillor Hardwick added: "We are pleased to be entering into this new contract with Trent & Dove.

"The improvements we have been able to make to the service will complement other initiatives the Council is taking or supporting to address homelessness for people within East Staffordshire.

"Over the last year the Borough Council secured the services of an outreach worker through Staffordshire County Council Supporting People and we are hopeful that they will continue to support this initiative. We have also supported the YMCA project at St James Court in Burton to provide a centre for homeless people at risk of rough sleeping where they can get emergency accommodation and help to move on into mainstream housing."

The Council has secured £600,000 of funding towards the project which is being developed by Burton YMCA and Midland Heart.
